A break is well deserved, but Dr. Ray Huntington of the Huntington Learning Center urges parents to engage their children in learning activities to avoid summer regression. Put simply, summer regression is the loss of academic knowledge gained throughout the school year. Learning loss or the summer slide among students over summer break is a very real problem that we see often, says Huntington, adding that most students can lose several months of grade-level equivalency in math and reading achievement during this period. He offers several ways for parents to help minimize summer regression: Read daily. A daily reading habit is one of the easiest ways for children to keep their brains in shape over summer and deter any loss of reading ability. Incorporate reading into the summer routine. Check out book clubs or summer reading programs offered at your local library or book store. Visit the library every week. Start a series as a family and read a book together. Write often. Writing frequently will help your child keep up important literacy skills such as self-expression and vocabulary acquisition. While you might have trouble convincing your child to write essays or book reports this summer, creative writing or journal writing still has many benefits. It encourages creativity, problem solving and experimentation with various types of storytelling, and also improves communication skills. Plan educational visits. Dont forget that visits to your local history, science, art and other museums are fun learning opportunities. If youre taking any vacations, incorporate a family field trip to an interesting monument, historical site or museum in the area youre visiting. So read on to hear my explanation and dont worry this bipolar has nothing to do with the dreaded mental disorder. In mathematics, the polar coordinate system is a two-dimensional coordinate system in which each point on a plane is determined by a distance from a fixed point and an angle from a fixed direction. Sounds not so bad, hmm? Incidentally, and because I do much better in history than in math, the concepts of angle and radius were already used by the ancient Greeks such as Hipparchus and Archimedes. These are names I can remember. Extending our joke to our bipolar bear we now learn what is a bipolar coordinate system. It is based on Apollonian circles, that is circles that intersect at right angles. The curves of constant ? and of ? are circles that intersect at right angles. The coordinates have two foci F1 and F2. And thats the essence of it. Google Library a blessing or a curse for education Google wants to create the world's largest library - online. The Internet gargantuan wants to expand its 'Google Books' programme to cover almost all books currently in or out of print, essentially outstripping even the UK copyright libraries, such as the British and Bodleian libraries, in quantity of content. The suggested format includes a remuneration scheme for authors whose work remains in copyright, but does open up a whole can of worms regarding fair use and accessibility. On the plus side, the project would provide a massive educational resource, the like of which has never been seen before. It will make key texts available to pretty much everyone in the developed world. Clearly this tool can be an unprecedented help to students and tutors alike, providing a one-stop literary research tool, with contents comparable to the most trusted real-world sources. However, such a tool does present a thorny copyright issue, with many authors feeling they are being asked to sign away their work for a pittance; this includes academic papers as well as fiction. It could also encourage a lazy approach to research, chaining students even more strongly to their computers. In creating a resource on this scale, Google will effectively capture the market, possibly reducing the number of unbiased sources available in the long term and essentially creating a weaker research environment.
